Magnetic Optics has developed a case for the Pentax Optio W60 camera and expects to develop cases for other cameras and electronic equipment. The case may be rented to SCUBA divers and uses patented magnetic repulsion actuators rather than traditional o-ring feed throughs.  In addition to requiring no o-ring maintenance (cleaning, lubrication or replacement), no failure mode is known for these actuators. Further, the case is not intended to be opened by a renter. In fact, pin-in Torx machine screws retain the face-plate to discourage opening. Renters receive their photos on disk or via the internet after returning the camera in its case (presumably with any other equipment they may have rented). It is unnecessary for divers to further transport the camera, maintain it or figure out how to interface it with their computer.

Digital cameras are mass-produced without consideration for underwater use.  They often have a large number of push buttons. A common practice on underwater camera housings is to operate only the “essential” buttons. Simple and inexpensive magnetic repulsion actuators allow all push buttons to be operated.

Experiments and calculations indicate that the Magnetic Optics case will be reliable at 300’ or 100m.

The remarkable PENTAX Optio W60 was chosen for several advantages:
  1. PENTAX is well known & reputable.
  2. Absence of extending lens allows simpler case with smaller volume.
  3. “Macro” setting

  4. “Underwater” setting

  5. Superior 10M pixel image (900 image capacity on 4GB SDHC card).

  6. Waterproof (4m for 2 Hrs) allowing it to survive unlikely case leaks.
